Necklace Lengths Guide: 14, 16, 18, and 20 Inches Explained
Necklace length changes everything about how a piece looks: where it sits on the neck, which necklines it works with, and whether a pendant hangs where it should. Here is what each standard length does, and how to pick the right one.
Where each length sits
- 14 inches — choker. Sits snug at the base of the neck. Best with open necklines and high collars it can peek above. Choose this only if you like a close fit.
- 16 inches — crew. Rests at the collarbone, like a crew-neck shirt. The most versatile short length; works with almost any neckline.
- 18 inches — princess. The standard length, and the most popular. Falls just below the collarbone, above the neckline of most tops. If you are buying a gift and have to guess, 18 inches is the safe choice.
- 20 inches — matinee. Sits a few inches below the collarbone, over the chest. Good for larger pendants and for layering over a longer chain.
- 22 inches and longer — opera. Falls at or below the bust line. Made for layering and statement pieces.
Match the length to the neckline
A simple rule: the necklace should either sit above the neckline or clearly below it, not fight with it. Crew necks pair with 16–18 inches; V-necks look best with a pendant at 18–20 inches that follows the V; strapless and off-shoulder styles can carry anything from a choker to an opera length. Turtlenecks call for 20 inches or longer, worn over the fabric.
Pendant size and length
Small pendants shine at 16–18 inches, close to the face. Larger or heavier pendants need 18–20 inches so they hang properly instead of pulling the chain up. If the pendant is the star — a halo, a gemstone, a heart — give it room at 18 inches or longer.
How to measure at home
Take a string or measuring tape, wrap it around your neck at the spot where you want the necklace to sit, and measure the length. That number is your ideal chain length. For layering, space lengths about 2 inches apart (for example, 16 and 18 inches) so the chains do not tangle.
A note on Tirafina necklaces
Most Tirafina pendants come with an 18-inch chain — the princess length, the most versatile standard. If you prefer a different length, an extender chain from any jeweler adjusts it easily.
